Weekend Wanderings: Ballard

I spent the weekend wandering around Ballard with one of my favorite people, my mom.  We started the day by dropping by Savour, Ballard's purveyor of specialty foods and drinks.  The first thing that hits you is the delicious smell...I had a Pavlovian response and I'm not embarrassed to say it.  The gals working at Savour couldn't have been nicer, offering to let us sample any of the charcuterie or artisan cheeses in the case.  The store has a rustic feel with long wood tables where you can sit and enjoy a beautifully designed sandwich and an artisan beer or cider.  They also have a children's menu.

One of the items that caught my eye were the jams from Deluxe Foods particularly the Crab Apple Jelly.  We met Rebecca Staffel, chief tasting officer and creator of Deluxe Foods, the next day at the Ballard Farmer's Market.  The Crab Apple Jelly took me back to my childhood. My grandmother used to make it and I don't think I've had any since then.  Rebecca's version was delicious and  limited (her ingredients are seasonal, sustainable and local).  Crab apples are out of season so she only has a limited supply of the jelly in the larder.

After our lunch at India Bistro, we headed over to the Nightingale Gallery.  They have the coolest vintage inspired prints of Seattle neighborhoods and the 1962 World's Fair.  I had to get a few including one of the Smith Tower I'm giving to my sister (she had her wedding reception at the Chinese Room).
Next stop was Velouria, one of my favorite boutiques in the world.  Vintage inspired bathing suits from Frankie Four and Pare Umbrella...I was in heaven.
Our final stop was at Dandelion Botanical Company.  We ran into Evie Carr, the inspiring aromatherapist who taught a class at Spa Scotta.  She is extremely knowledgable about essential oils and makes learning about them a real experience.  I was happy to learn Dandelion is going to be celebrating 16 years of business in June.  Proprietor Mary Kachi Cassinelli has been helping me choose essential oils and other fun things to use for most of those 16 years.  I can remember wandering in the store when it was still in Fremont and I was a baby esthetician looking for new things to create facial masques.
All in all, a fantastic weekend spent wandering around Ballard.

Plume Hair Feathers are Here!

Spa Scotta now offers Plume Hair Feathers.  These hair feathers will last up to one year (you need to have them reapplied as your hair grows out).  You can flat iron, curl and wash these feathers without causing any harm.  Plume uses an exclusive aluminum crimp bead: coated with silicon-oxide and designed for comfort, durability and effortless concealment. Plume Weightless Crimp Beads are small enough in size that they don’t need a variety of colors to camouflage their location. Another bonus...Plume is a local company located in the Fremont area of Seattle.
We have a gorgeous array of colors from olive green to beautiful neutrals to vibrant reds and pinks.  The feathers are $15 each including application.  We also have hair tinsel in various colors. Call today to schedule your splash of color!  206-522-5800

Ear Piercing at Spa Scotta

I love to pierce ears.  I was asked by a client awhile ago if we pierced ears at Spa Scotta, which set me on the hunt for the perfect ear piercing system.  I chose the Inverness unit for a couple of reasons:
  • Fully Enclosed Capsules
The fully enclosed earring capsules guarantee the safest ear piercing possible. It guards against contamination prior to piercing. You will not see an exposed post before the piercing for safety and sterility.
  • Safety Clutch™ Earring Backs
Inverness Safety Clutch™ earring backs allow for the safest healing of an ear piercing. The earring back shields the sharp pointed earring tip and provides proper healing without allowing the earring back to be squeezed too close to the ear. This greatly enhances the healing process by allowing proper air flow.

It's fast and safe.  First, the client chooses the earring style they want.  Next, I wipe the ear lobes with alcohol and use a surgical pen to mark the spots where the earrings will be placed. We look at the spacing and confirm the position.  Finally, I load the device with the sterile earring compartment and pierce the ear.  The actual piercing takes a split second.

I have pierced both adults and children and I have to say I love my young ladies.  They are so stoic when picking out their earrings, earnest while listening to the aftercare instructions and ecstatic when the piercing is complete.  They make my job such a joy, I think I get as excited as they do when they see the final result.
